Impact of a Clinical Simulation Program on Communication Skills, Psychological Well-being, and Self-Perception of Personality Traits in Nursing Students.

Abstract

Introduction: Communication skills are essential in clinical practice. Clinical simulation has growing empirical support as a training strategy, yet its effects on psychological well-being and personality traits in nursing students has received little attention. The present study analyzed the effect of a clinical simulation program on communication skills, emotional management, psychological well-being, and personality traits in nursing students. Methodology: A quasi-experimental pre-post study without a control group was conducted with 101 second-year nursing students (Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca). Ad hoc self-perception measures, the Health Professionals Communication Skills Scale (EHC-PS), the Ryff Scale, and the Big Five scale were administered. The intervention comprised 11 clinical simulation sessions within a compulsory course. Wilcoxon tests with Holm-Bonferroni correction were used. Results: Self-perceived communication and emotional management improved with large effects (p< .001). Among validated instruments, significant improvements were found in EHC-PS Total (r = .308), Social Skills (r= .275), Self-Acceptance (r = .374), total Psychological Well-Being (r = .317), self-perceived Emotional Stability (r = .496), Agreeableness (r = .449), Extraversion (r = .305), and Conscientiousness (r = .263). Respect did not change. Discussion: Effects were stronger on self-perception measures than on standardized instruments, suggesting greater changes in confidence than in specific skills. The absence of a control group limits causal interpretation. Conclusion: Clinical simulation showed potential for improving communicative competencies, well-being, and self-perceived personality traits, although controlled studies are needed.

María H. Benavente Cuesta es doctora en psicología y diplomada en Enfermería, es profesora titular de la UPSA en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, donde imparte varias materias relacionadas con el ámbito clínico y psicosocial de la salud. Así mismo, imparte asignaturas de psicología y de procesos sanitarios en el Máster Universitario en formación del profesorado de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria y Bachillerato, Formación Profesional y Enseñanza de Idiomas. Autora de varios libros, así como de otras publicaciones, artículos científicos en revistas y capítulos de libros. Ha participado en Congresos nacionales e internacionales con comunicaciones orales y escritas, de investigaciones en el campo de la Psicología de la Salud.

Carlos Aznárez Gómez, Universidad Pontificia Salamanca

Carlos Aznárez Gómez es psicólogo y profesor ayudante en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, donde imparte docencia en Psicología y Técnicas de Comunicación Psicosocial. Su labor docente e investigadora se centra en la humanización asistencial, las teorías implícitas de la personalidad y la comunicación en contextos clínicos. Asimismo, desarrolla investigación en neurociencia computacional aplicada al análisis de EEG y a la detección temprana de patologías neurodegenerativas.

 

Paula San Martín González , Universidad Pontificia Salamanca

Paula San Martín González es enfermera, doctora por la Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca y profesora en su Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud. Es instructora de Simulación Clínica Avanzada por la SESSEP, a través de la Universidad Católica de Murcia. Cuenta con formación especializada en cuidados paliativos oncológicos, urgencias y cuidados críticos, y gestión y liderazgo en enfermería. Ha participado en congresos nacionales con investigaciones sobre simulación clínica y ámbito psicosocial. Además, posee amplia experiencia asistencial en cirugía, medicina interna, oncología, urgencias, UCI y consultas especializadas.

María Ángeles Flores García , Universidad Pontificia Salamanca

María Ángeles Flores García es enfermera y profesora en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, donde imparte materias relacionadas con los cuidados de enfermería. Su trayectoria combina amplia experiencia docente y asistencial, especialmente en la coordinación del Prácticum y en el acompañamiento de prácticas clínicas. Ha desarrollado actividad clínica en hemodiálisis y en distintas unidades hospitalarias, entre ellas medicina interna, cirugía general y traumatología.

María Paz Quevedo-Aguado es catedrática de Psicología de la Personalidad, impartiendo docencia desde 1986, ha participado en numerosos congresos y Reuniones Científicas Nacionales e Internacionales y publicado en el ámbito de la Psicología de la Personalidad, centrándose en el modelo de Teorías Implícitas de Personalidad, Autoestima, y Bienestar Psicológico.
