Analysis of the discourse of trainee teachers regarding the incidence of their practicum on the construction of their professional identity
Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the discourseof trainee teachers regarding the inciden-
ce of their practicums on the construction
of their professional identity. The study
surveyed seventy-six students all of whom
did the fourth-year Primary Education
practicum at the University of Jaén during
academic year 2016-17. Twenty-one na-
rratives were selected depending on the
quality of the stories. Two complementary
methodologies were used: Critical Dis-
course Analysis and Fundamental Theory.
The students’ narratives revolved around
four major categories: “teacher professio-
nalization”, “use of methodologies”, “ethi-
cal sense” and “vocation”. These catego-
ries were characterized by implementing
either a rational sense of conceiving tea-
ching or a merely humanistic perception. In the proposal for change made by the
authors it was highlighted that the Uni-
versity should manage the new from the
traditional.
