Abstract

This article analyses the characteristics of
rural state schools in the Basque Country
in the transition from the 19th to the 20th
centuries. It seeks to contribute new elements
to the debate about the role of the
education system in the formation of national
identities. From an interdisciplinary
approach integrating contributions from
the field of History, Social Psychology and
Social Science Didactics, the teaching
practices, used materials and the characteristics
of the pupils of these schools are
researched. This analysis reduces the effectiveness of the nationalizing work done

in these schools and emphasises the importance
of the social and political context
of pupils to understand the leaning towards
Spanish or Basque national identity
of this population during these years.
