Abstract

Given its normative character. it is problematic to understand rationality from within a descriptive and nomological perspective such as that of the natural sciences. I relate such a normativity to the primitive character of the notions of a person and of an observable object and I defend that such notions operate within the 'natural attitude' framework which gives sense, amongst other things. to the validity and importance of science. After distinguishing a normative from a descriplive conception of rationality, I claim that the latter depends on the former and in no case replaces it. After that I study the impact of Sellars' demolition of phenomenalism and criticize the eliminativist conclusions reached by him, proposing a form of direct realism as an alternative.
