Abstract

In this eassay, I use Foucault's <> as a model of analysis for recognizing a technology of self in the texts of traditional political philosophy. The focus of my analysis is John Sturart Mill's On Liberty. I try to show that reading On Liberty as a <>, as Foucault does with various texts in the later volumenes of his series on the history of sexuality, has serious repercussions for the way we understand the tasks of political philosophy.
