Abstract

This paper reviews the actualization of the Kantian conception of a fair and peaceful international order, which Rawls and Habermas have tried to accomplish on some of their recent writings. On his last book, Rawls argues that the democratic structure of the state’s institutions is a necessary condition for international peace, even more important than the creation of international institutions. This thesis can be completed with some of Habermas’s considerations about the relations between state and nation: if the states (even the democratic ones) have to be peaceful, it is necessary that societies are integrated by postnational forms of collective identity.
