Abstract

This article is the result of a fielwork research among several benedictine monasteries and zendos in which it was observed and contrasted the ritual singing of gregorian chant and the silent meditation of zen buddhist initiates. The ethnography is based on participant observation and interview in Spain, as well as in written confessions made by christians believers which could be read in different librairies in Spain and Italy. Both rituals gestures and prayer imply a sort of invisible and transcendent reference whose knowledge seams to be based on a deep spiritual experience. The article shows how the believers’ communal life offers them some social and cultural foundation that legitimate the knowledge gained in spiritual experience, and how contemplation of goodness comes to result in a more reliable knowledge than any other.
