Abstract

In this paper I will examine one of the most famous arguments in DAVIDSON’s philosophy: the omniscient interpreter argument. My aim is to examine a group of criticisms formulated against it following a typology due to G. KEMP and whether it is possible a defence of the argument from those criticisms. I will argue that the only way for the argument to work is by considering the omniscience of the interpreter as irrelevant. This implies to recognize that it is a bad argument. I will finally argue that the main problem with the omniscient interpreter argument is of a general kind and it is due to consider that the answer to the sceptic has to be direct, as if his problem was a natural one without philosophical suppositions.
