Abstract

Elias Canetti (1905-1994) is presented here as a lucid and original witness of 20th century, because of his longevity, his physical and mental migrations, and his responsability as a writer. This responsability led him to fight against power and death as the two biggest evils of humanity, and to cultivate writing and metamorphosis as ways of resurrection and celebration of life. In his work Mass and power, he carried out a genealogy of both of these phenomenons, based on the two major passions of human being: love and fear. In this article I assess the successes and the limitations of both this new «genealogy of moral», openly opposed to Nietzsche, and the profession of a writer, which implies according to Canetti an ethical answer to the threats of this global society.
