Abstract

The following paper focuses on Rousseau.s musical aesthetics and the concept of nature. Rousseau.s philosophical evolution offers one of his most interesting proposals when he defines man from the perspective of a natural being. Which are the human features of that being? How it is possible to distinguish between nature and human being? These are fundamental questions also for an account of Rousseau.s use of nature in his thoughts on music. The main task of this paper is to propose a parallelism between Rousseau.s philosophical evolution regarding the concept of nature in his main works and that of his works on aesthetics of music, from the Lettre sur la musique francoise to the Hssai sur l.origine des langues.
