Abstract

The main goal of this article is to vindicate the place of Argumentation Theory within Philosophy. Despite the unquestionable importance of the study of argumentation, this topic has hardly got the attention of philosophers for centuries. ! try to show that this fact has a twofold explanation: on the one hand, it is due to the traditional clash between Philosophy and Rhetoric, and on the other hand, to the spectacular development of Formal Logic, I will try to show why both reasons are spurious. Nevertheless, my defence of a rhetorical perspective for the study of argumentation will not depend on the idea that, in the last resort, the value of any argument depends just on its audience. Rather, it depends on the fact that rhetorical criteria happen to be complementary to logical criteria when dealing with the evaluation of natural language arguments.
