Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the meaning of <> and <> in the work of Hannah Arendt and, particularly, to emphasize the necessity of judging in order to give a meaning to existence. The hypothesis that is here defended is that there is in Arendt´s work a non-explicit conception of the human subject that is conditioning the way in which <> is understood. The paper holds that there is no rupture between The Human Condition (1957) and her Lectures on Kant´s political Philosophy (1982), and that both works have to be connected in order to evaluate the significance of Arendt´s thesis of giving a meaning to action by means of judging and understanding.
