Abstract

This paper discusses the present value of Quine's proposal for naturalizing epistemology, advanced several decades ago. Some of its more valuable contributions are vindicated, while its weaker aspects are pointed at, Finally, I introduce certain varieties of contemporaty naturalism, whose defenders, notably R. Giere and L. Laudan, attempt to deal with classical objections to naturalism by ammending it in diverging ways. A central thesis in the article is that naturalism cannot saveguard the normative dimension of epistemology and philosophy of science unless naturalistic philosophers leave aside their usual compromise with a purely instrumental theory of rationality.
