Abstract

The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) is an instrument developed by Raedeke and Smith (2001) to measure of athlete burnout. It´s composed of three subscales: emotional/physical exhaustion, reduced sense of accomplishment and sport devaluation. The purpose of this research was to begin adapting the ABQ into Spanish. Firstly, the questionnaire was translated into Spanish (with verification by back-translation). Then, a sample of young soccer players (n=15) was used to pilot a study on items comprehension. After modifying the statement of some items based on their feedback, the questionnaire was applied to a sample of 140 young Spanish soccer players aged 16 and 19 years old. The data were submitted to a confirmatory factor analysis. Certain item modifications were suggested that were supported by subsequent exploratory factor analysis. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the unmodified questionnaire were satisfactory.
