Intentionality towards the practice of physical activity in primary education students: implications for health promotion and occupational perspective

Abstract

Physical activity plays a fundamental role in individuals' holistic development throughout the lifespan, contributing not only to improvements in physical fitness but also to social and cognitive well-being. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the intention to be physically active among Primary Education students. To this end, the Intention to be Physically Active Measure (MIFA) questionnaire was administered. The sample comprised 185 participants (96 fifth-grade and 89 sixth-grade Primary Education students) aged between 10 and 12 years. The results revealed no statistically significant differences according to sex or age, with very small effect sizes across all analyses (η²p = .000–.015). Nevertheless, positive trends were observed, particularly regarding the participants' strong agreement with the importance of engaging in physical activity both inside and outside the school setting. The absence of significant differences according to sex or age, together with the negligible effect sizes, suggests that during this educational stage the intention to be physically active remains relatively stable across the analysed subgroups, being more closely associated with motivational and enjoyment-related factors. These findings extend the applied relevance of the study beyond the educational context, providing useful evidence from an occupational perspective for the design of preventive strategies aimed at promoting participation in physically active occupations and fostering health promotion from early childhood.
