Handball coaches in Brazil: Demographic, training and professional performance profile

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the demographic profile, training and professional performance of handball coaches who work in Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study, with a descriptive and quantitative design, based on information from 226 handball coaches. The selection of these participants was non-random for convenience, through a network to expand contacts, based on research tools of the virtual snowball method. Information was obtained through a self-completed online questionnaire. Data were tabulated and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Coaches from all states of the country and the Federal District participated in the study. The mean age was 40.8 years, with the majority being men (81%). Almost all participants have a degree in Physical Education or Sports (89.8%). The main place of work is the school, most of the participants work in only one place as a coach and do not have the modality as their main source of income (63.3%). Still, almost half of the participants reported acting alone in their team, denoting a shortage of technical staff in most teams. The results of this investigation contribute to a better understanding of the scenario in which handball coaches in Brazil are inserted, making it possible to highlight the needs and discrepancies found, so that the data attract the attention of the competent institutions, mainly aiming to carry out actions aiming to improve this field performance, making it possible to expand the space for women, bring financial appreciation to professionals and improve structural conditions.
