Abstract

It is well known that the 19th century has been, for Y. Bonnefoy, an essential pole: above all the poets Nerval, Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Mallarmé, to whom he has dedicated a lot of articles and books. The aim of this article is to analyse a work published by Bonnefoy in 2001 (that is to say when he was nearly eighty years old, at the end of a fulfilling life) which is a summary of his reflections on the poetry of the 19th century. There he proposes either a correction or a reaffirmation of what, for the poet of Tours, is the “essence” of the 19th century. Now we will try to analyse it.
