Abstract

Far from being a homogeneous collection, The Italian Chronicles may be read as a venture into writing in that Stendhal, being disappointed by a first treatment of the chronicle, strays, text after text, from translation in order to rework the narrative material. Dramatization may well be the key word of the work, based on Italian texts. The Italian Chronicles thus partakes fully of that aesthetic of the short story, which came into use in the first part of the nineteenth century, and rests upon the powerful dramatic tension that the narrative creates by pitting violently characters turned into Goliaths against one another. That tension culminates in the fall, where death figures as the apotheosis of the heroine.
