Abstract

Among the French short storywriters in the end of the Nineteenth century, Catulle Mendès is certainly one of the most prolific. His tales, falling within of that Jean de Palacio names the «merveilleux perverti», are now well-known for the critics. However, all a part of the short storywriter’s works remains at rediscovering. That is especially the case of the Mendès’ tales which are gathered in some collections such as Monstres parisiens and Le Rose et le noir. Through such works, the writer investigates some of the darkest features of the decadent aesthetic. Here I’d like to deal with this «black» way by studying the cruelty and the fantastic.
