Abstract

In Les Confessions de Jeanne de Valois, Antonine Maillet delivers a series of lively images which constitute a keen reflection of her protagonist: a nun in her nineties who narrates what conventional History will never touch upon. The story deals with three subjects which continue to have an impact on those who are struggling for the survival of their language and culture: nationalists; on those who are fighting for equal rights between men and woman: feminists; on those who come up against a childish Catholicism, timid, possessed by its power and, to boot, misogynistic. The paper will tackle these three subjects, often turning to the voice of Jeanne de Valois who expresses the full spontaneity of orality through the verbal magic of Antonine Maillet.
