Abstract

The development of the Semantic web, understood as a shared space for exchange of structured data, has led to a renewed interest in traditional controlled vocabularies. This study presents an evaluation methodology that enables a systematic analysis of thesauri management tools applying a set of criteria that takes into account the purpose, functionalities of the application, integrity and consistency of vocabulary and other crucial issues related to interoperability, with particular attention to compatibility with Semantic web standards (RDF/SKOS). Integrability of these tools in other information systems, information interoperability, merging of thesauri between different information systems, or the ability to combine thesauri from different sources have are also part of the criteria proposed.
