Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are becoming increasingly integrated into society, transforming a wide range of sectors and reshaping workplace practices. In this context, Library and Information Science can also benefit from these technologies, particularly through the automation of repetitive tasks such as cataloging. This study analyzed the use of AI for the creation of bibliographic records. Adopting a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, the research evaluated the performance of six generative AI tools: ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok, Copilot, and CatalogerGPT, the latter specifically designed to support cataloging activities. The same prompts were applied to all six tools, enabling a comparative analysis of their outputs. The results, deposited in Zenodo in accordance with Open Science principles, showed that Gemini and CatalogerGPT produced the most complete responses. However, all the tools exhibited errors and hallucinations in certain aspects. The study concludes that AI can serve as a valuable support tool for Library and Information Science professionals, although it still requires expert supervision and validation.
