Liberalism, disentailment and library policy. The Valencian case

Abstract

It is examined the library policy followed by the first liberalism in the Valencian region during the first half of the 19th century. It is analyzed the Plan General de Bibliotecas of 1813, the different disentailing processes (1812, 1820 and 1835) and its culmination in a model of public, provincial and university library that will become general in 1838 to the rest of Spain. The political and material reality in which this project was developed supposed its double failure as preservative centres of the patrimony and as centres for reading promotion
