Abstract

In this paper I deal with the adaptation of old agrarian structures to the new socioeconomic realities of the modern world. Particularly, attention is given to processes of urbanization whose planification can be labelled «resort» which may, on the one hand, alter the utility of formerly barren soils and, on the other, promote a kind of endogenetic development founded on a range of high-quality companies, specialized in the leisure culture. The first part of the paper deals with the problems that affect the agrarian sector in the region of Murcia, and responsibilities are found both inside and outside the area, among others: discouragement, attraction toward urban ways of life and land speculation. One usual outcome of the situation is urbanization derived from the development of golf courses. The second part is concerned with three types of periurbanization: a) periurbanization in the literal sense, b) periurbanization of coastal areas and c) periurbanization of isolated tourist resorts. Attention is mostly given to the third type, often in comparison with the others. Finally, a section is devoted to the territorial, socio-economic and environmental impacts derived from the development of high quality services for a mainly exogenetic mass of tertiary workers.
