Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the spatial and temporal dynamics of the preferential tourist destinations in Mexico within the context of the expansion of the tourist economy in the last two decades. In the first part of the study, we define the central concept on which this research is based: spatial preference. Then, we go on to identify the ten most important tourist destinations in Mexico, in 1991 and 2005, defined by different indicators such as the annual number and type of incoming tourists and the tourist growth index. Finally, we explain the methodological procedure followed to find out 56 preferential tourist destinations in the country, the typology proposed to categorize this group of places and the eleven resulting types that, in turn, reflect the recent dynamics of the Mexican tourist economy.
