Abstract

The traditional view of the text, which has been extended to encompass languaje as a whole, sees it as the closed work of a specific author; its well-defined meaning has to be recovered by the receiver. Opposing this view, a new perspective on the text and textual coherence is introduced, and they are now seen as the process of joint activity of the participants. Meaning is not "transmitted" by the producer and interpreted by the receiver, but is jointly built. This view of the text and languaje is compatible with the most recent developments in cognition theory, according to which cognition is embodied but also situated and goal-directed.
