Abstract

This work deals with the study of phonetic features in the Navarrese dialect, with the aid of tools such as the "Fuero General de Navarra" and the "Atlas Lingüístico y Etnográfico de Aragón, Navarra y La Rioja". We have found phonetic matches comparing data from both sources, even though it seems obvious that Castilian has acted as a leveling force throughout the centuries and thus Navarrese has come to adopt Castilian phonology, with a few archaic features still standing in the rural vernacular. Navarrese connects with the western peninsular dialects, such as Leonese, in the retention of Latin -MB-, which Castilian simplified to -M-
