LA LENGUA DE LOS TESTAMENTOS (SIGLOS XV y XVI)
Abstract
In this paper we analyse twenty testaments approved between the XVth and the XVIth centuries paying attention both to their general structure -that is, the distribution of the various parts of the document, and their linguistic realization. These testaments present a twofold facet: a religious one, which becomes manifest in the invocation, the profession of faith and the great quantity of legacies and pious works, and a juridical one, which can be recognized in the reference to the fulfillment of the legal requirements for the validity of the testament, as well as in the linguistic reflection of its imperative character: modal periphrases and abundance of coordination. Other features, such as the vacillating use of the verbal person, which represents either the voice of the notary or that the testator, not always well separated, show that the juridical language had not yet reached the degree of fixity characteristic of later epochsDownloads
