Modal and epistemic uses of the verb sentir
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyse following the theoretical tools established by cognitive linguistics the modal and epistemic uses of the verb sentir. We will demonstrate, from inductive observations based on a large corpus, that sentir has generated numerous uses diachronically in Spanish associated with the speaker subjectivity, with the expression of knowledge and with the verbalization of emotional processes. Thus, it will be proved that sentir is a very versatile verb from syntactic and semantic view and a highly productive lexical item in the discourse.
