Abstract

In this paper we propose an alternative Spanish version of the fable “The North Wind and the Sun”, used by the International Phonetic Association to illustrate the pronunciation of different languages. This version has a number of advantages over the standard text that appears in Martínez, Fernández and Carrera (2003) and in Monroy and Hernández (2015), since it includes two additional phonemes, it has fewer word repetitions, it is more balanced phonetically, and it shows a phoneme frequency distribution that is closer to the average distribution in natural language.
