Design and validation of a gamified flipped learning teaching strategy to develop computational thinking in future teachers
Abstract
In recent years, teaching strategies such as flipped learning (FL) and gamification have been successfully implemented at the university level. However, there is still limited scientific literature that combines these two approaches to enhance and analyze possible improvements in motivation and academic performance, especially at the university stage. This study has two objectives: on one hand, to develop and validate a didactic intervention using a gamified flipped classroom methodology to work on computational thinking in students of the teaching degree, specifically in the subject of information and communication technologies in education. On the other hand, to know the students' viewpoints after implementing these interventions. Seven experts in educational technology participated in the validation of judgment, all of them specialists in the area of educational technology, through personalized interviews for each specialist describing the steps followed for its creation according to expert judgment. Additionally, a questionnaire with 7 Likert-type questions was administered to 60 second-grade Primary Education students to determine the level of satisfaction after the implementation of the gamified flipped classroom didactic intervention. Furthermore, individualized interviews were conducted with 10 selected students. The interviews were transcribed, then the results were coded, and finally analyzed using MAXQDA. The results obtained showed that the intervention is effective for its implementation in university students. Most students found the intervention useful for improving their understanding of computational thinking skills, facilitating their study, and enhancing their academic performance. Overall, this study indicates that the gamified flipped classroom methodology can be effective in enhancing the understanding of PC skills in students. Future research should continue exploring this methodology in other subjects and educational levels.
