Technological development has transformed the ways in which we learn, communicate and participate in society. However, these transformations are not neutral; rather, they are shaped by power relations that reproduce structural inequalities, including gender inequalities, at the intersection with other axes of inequality such as social class, ethnicity, age, disability and geographical location.
The special issue on ‘Gender and Educational Technology’ of the Inter-University Journal of Research in Educational Technology (RIITE) aims to bring together contributions which, from a feminist, critical and intersectional perspective – understood as the analysis of the interaction between multiple axes of inequality in shaping digital educational experiences – analyse the role of technologies in shaping educational opportunities, identities and experiences. The aim is to highlight both the persistent gaps and forms of violence in digital environments and the practices, policies, technological designs and educational innovations that promote equality, inclusion and social justice.
This issue focuses on the need to rethink educational technology through approaches that integrate gender equality, critical digital literacy and women’s participation. It also aims to foster dialogue between research and educational practice, incorporating analyses that highlight how these inequalities intersect and give rise to differing experiences based on multiple social factors.
We invite the academic community and professionals from the third sector to submit papers that address, from different methodological perspectives and educational contexts, the intersections between gender and educational technology, thereby contributing to the creation of fairer, more inclusive and more democratic digital environments.
Thematic areas:
