Abstract
Many altarpieces in the parishes along the borderlands between Galicia and northern Portugal remain to this day without known authorship or origin. One of the main objectives of this article is to reopen this issue through the study of a paradigmatic case: the high altarpiece of the parish church of Santa Mariña do Rosal. This work clearly diverges from the canonical models of Galician Baroque, aligning instead with the aesthetics of the so-called Portuguese national style. Through a methodology that combines archival research, previous studies, and on-site comparative analysis of works from northern Portugal, this paper offers a historical and artistic reassessment of the altarpiece.
In particular, it examines the similarities with the altarpiece of the Bom Jesus dos Mareantes confraternity and the ensemble of the church of the Misericórdia, both located in Caminha. These parallels support a proposed chronology between 1700 and 1725 and suggest a connection with workshops around the Barcelos region. If one message should be taken from this study, it is the urgent need to continue researching the religious art of the borderlands, as a way to reconstruct shared histories and honor the legacy of those who made this heritage possible.
