Jhumpa Lahiri: A Writer Converted to Literary Italian

Abstract

Jhumpa Lahiri's literary trajectory is taking an unusual turn: from successful beginnings as an English-language storyteller to a broadening of the register of her Italian-language work. This article describes several aspects of this process of literary language twist by providing the main external facts of this process, as they emerge from biblio-chronology and public statements by the author, and, secondly, by undertaking several samples of various significant fragments of her work to point to the purpose of this shift. The article analyses a particularly relevant symbolic element present at the beginning of Dove mi trovo, the first and only novel written in Italian to date, and the material object of this article, and examines the value attributed by the author to the self-translation of the novel into English as a hermeneutic key to the project.

Author Biography

Álvaro de la Rica, CUNEF UNIVERSIDAD

Álvaro de la Rica es Profesor Titular de Teoría de la literatura y literatura comparada (ANECA, 2015). Profesor de Humanidades en CUNEF Universidad, ha escrito 11 libros, el más reciente Órdago, un paseo por la frontera vasca del Pirineo y más de 30 artículos en revistas académicas especializadas. Su libro Kafka y el Holocausto ha sido traducido al francés por la editorial Gallimard. Premio «Fondation de Treilles» a la creación literaria, ha sido crítico literario en los periódicos ABC, La Razón, La Vanguardia y El Mundo. Ha dirigido la Cátedra Félix Huarte de Estética Contemporánea de la Universidad de Navarra (2003-2013). Revisor por pares en RILCE, Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos y en la Revista Valenciana de Estudios de Filosofía y Letras – Universidad de Guanajuato, México. Ha dirigido tres tesis doctorales y sus líneas de investigación: Literatura española y francesa de los siglos XX y XXI. Escritura autobiográfica. Cultura centroeuropea de los siglos XX y XXI. Nihilismo y traducción. Poesía y artes plásticas. Actualmente escribe un Mapa de la literatura occidental en el que recorre tres mil años de tradición literaria desde los orígenes de la escritura hasta la literatura escrita bajo la sombra de la Shoah.
