Abstract

The focus of this article is the use of the word profondo and others from the same root in Leopardi’s Zibaldone. This use reveals various peculiarities and shifting senses, either in relation to the internal dynamics of the main questions posed by Leopardian thinking, or in relation to the kind of tradition associated with this term in earlier essayists and the essay genre. Finally, this article provides a succinct comparative study of the meaning and applications of profondo throughout the history of Italian and Spanish poetry in order to define certain specificities of both literatures as well as Leopardi’s role in the variations in meaning this concept has undergone in the transition towards Italian poetics in the 20th century.
