Parents’ reading habits and educational level on the perception of communicative competence in preservice teachers
Abstract
The main purpose of this work is to know to what extent the variables ‘love of reading in the family’ and ‘parents’ educational level’ may have an impact on the perception of communicative competence in university students participating in this study. This research starts from a sample of 361 Primary Teacher Degree students coming from two Spanish universities. A descriptive-transversal study has been made, consisting in a contingency analysis. Three competence units have been defined from the factorial analysis: effective oral communication in the classroom, register adequacy and effective production of written texts. The results clearly show the influence of the variable ‘love of reading in the family’ in the analysed dimensions. On the contrary, no relation is detected between these dimensions and the variable ‘parents’ educational level’.
