Abstract

We present the construction process and preliminary results of the Rock Climbing Psychological Abilities Questionnaire. We use as a theoretical background the Lazarus & Folkman’s stress theory, the Nideffer’s attentional model and some psychological abilities proposed by Harris & Harris. Initially we developed 73 items, corresponding to eight dimensions: commitment, beliefs, attentional control, emotional control, re-estructuration control, emotional symptomatology, physiological-behavioral symptomatology and cognitive symptomatology. Subjects were 77 male and female rock climbers. Mean age was 28 years and climbing level oscillated from beginners to elite. Factors analysis results show that seven of the eight dimensions were confirmed, with 25 items. Crombach’s Alpha coefficient for the questionnaire was 0.83. We discuss the contribution of sport psychology to rock climbing.
