Abstract

A new virus called COVID-19, began to spread in Wuhan (China) since the end of 2019, and is now found all over the world. This virus, in addition to increasing the risk of death from infection, also increases psychological pressure on humanity. Samples were taken from college students from the different UANL faculties, using cluster sampling, which responded to a battery of questionnaires that included the 7-ítem Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and those asking about the basic information of participants. We received 2,152 responses. Results indicated that 0,7% of respondents were experienced severe anxiety, 2,8% moderate anxiety and 20,9% mild anxiety. In addition, the factors Living in Urban Areas (OR = 821, 95% CI = 0,708 – 0,925), Family Income Stability (OR = 725, 95% CI = 0,643 – 0,815) and Living with Parents (OR = 701, 95% CI = 0,595 – 0,955) were protective against anxiety. Moreover, it was shown that having close relatives or acquaintances infected with coronavirs was a risk factor for increasing the anxiety of college students (OR = 3,009, 95% CI = 2,380 – 3,820). The results of the correlation analysis showed that the Daily Epidemic News, the Home Office and Having an Infected Relative or Acquaintance, were positively associated with anxiety symptoms (P < ,001). On the other hand, the use of Video Games and Technologies was negatively related to the level of anxiety (P < ,001). According to the study, it is suggested that students' mental health be monitored during the contingency caused by the COVID-19 epidemic.
