Abstract

In its original conception, the term sport was associated with health, fitness and fun. In subsequent developments, however, it was contaminated with very different meanings and experiences: Championism, self-worship, commercialization, doping and money. It is time for a scientific work in order to rescue the original meaning of the sports, to become a model for health and efficiency. The Most recent researches show that high performance sport demands psychological qualities that can also be useful to common people who wants to achieve a high level of excellence with minimal cost to the health: adequate self-rated judgements, high and achievable levels of expectations, specific approaches and responses to the partial frustrations, anabolic reactions to the challenges and a productive dynamic of functional self-improvement. It is examined the interventions and social and psychological models that may contribute to the goal that the champions can become models of health and efficiency. A goal perspective focused on the task during the sport initiation, trainers’ capability to educate psychological features that have been found associated with high performance and an "integrated model" of physical education, are some of the means to achieve it.
