Abstract

Imagery-based methods are widely used in sports training, and it is thus of interest to assess sportspersons' capacity for image formation. Since the development of specific tests to measure capacity for movement image formation, many authors have found a relationship between image formation capacity and sports ability. The present study aimed to assess which of the available imaging tests best discriminates between sports enthusiasts and normal subjects. To this end we selected a sample of 124 subjects, students at the Sports Sciences Faculty and Education Sciences Faculty. The imaging capacities of these subjects were evaluated by three tests: the Movement Imagery Questionnaire (MIQ) of Hall and Pongrac (1983), the Vividness of Movement Imagery Questionnaire (VMIQ) of Isaac, Marks and Russell (1986), and the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ) of Marks (1973). Significant differences were detected between sports enthusiasts and normal subjects on two scales of the VMIQ. The results are discussed and future lines of research proposed.
