Abstract

The purposes of the present study were: (i) establish the importance of perceived competence and intrinsic motivation, considering that Physical Education is an imposed curricular issue; and, (ii) determine the factors that determine future intention to exercise, taking into account a sequence of motivational sequences. A sample of 1099 Physical Education students (544 girls and 555 boys) was recruited from 11 northern and center region Portuguese schools. Participants ranged in age from 14 to 16 years (M=14.66, SD=0.75). The questionnaires used, were the same as Ntoumanis (2001a) study, after a translation and adaptation to Portuguese. Statistical procedures consisted in descriptive and linear association analyses, and structural equation modeling. The main results revealed the central and important role of perceived competence, in Physical Education context, while occurred associations with the others psychological mediators. Self-determined motivation predicted positive consequences, while external regulation and amotivation predicted negative consequences (boredom).
