Textbooks as tools for promoting physical activity and sport in equality: Comparative analysis of racial representation in textbooks published during logse and loe
Abstract
The aim of the work is to know if the textbooks of Physical Education models stereotyped depending on the race continue perpetuating. The results of the analysis of the books published during the term of the Organic Law 1/1990, of October 3, of General Educational System -LOGSE- revealed a treatment differentiated depending on the race. The racial diversity is omitted and a bias exists in the type of activities that the protagonists of the photographies practise depending on his race. In the communication there compare the images of the textbooks of EF edited under the legislative frames LOGSE and LOE -Organic law 2/2006, of May 3, of Education-. The aim is to determine if the stereotypes are perpetuated or they are excelling themselves. There were analyzed 3316 images published during the period LOGSE. Nowadays, the images edited with the LOE are codified. This work exposes the results of the first 8 analyzed books, a total of 539 photographies. For the content analysis of the images used an observation instrument developed ad hoc. Test Pilot, Consultation with experts and Observers triangulation are some of the demarcation criteria that support the instrument. Early results show some differences between the books published under both laws. The presence of races other than white is still low. It continues to associate the "other" races with sports like basketball and athletics, excluding them from other activities. Although the subjects of "other" races and not fall solely on sports performance don´t indicate a significant change in the treatment of racial diversity on the part of publishers.
