Abstract

The present paper deals with Manuel Arnillas’s translation into Spanish (1841) of Alfred de Vigny’s novel, Cinq-Mars (1826). Cing-Mars is the sole historical novel that the romantic novelist, De Vigny, wrote in his lifetime. This novel would begin Romanticism in France, following the trend already established in Europe by Scottish Walter Scott. The primary goal of this paper is to submit Arnillas’s translation into a translational analysis —laying especial emphasis on additions, omissions and modifications in the Spanish text with respect to its original— to understand the translational method and techniques the translator has employed throughout the process oftranslating.
