Abstract

The Library of the University of Vigo together with the Environmental Office have carried out an assessment of the environmental impacts of the special opening service on weekends, during the exams period of July 2013. The results of this study showed that the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) associated with this additional opening service come mostly from the electricity consumption as well as from the mobility of the library users. Additionally, a methodology for calculating the ecological footprint was proposed in order to facilitate the inclusion of sustainability criteria in scheduling and organization of this kind of service.
