The public library and the information society in Brazil

Abstract

The beginning of the Information Society's program in Brazil and its application in the Brazilian public libraries is described. In each country, the Information Society is being constructed along with different conditions and social development projects in accordance with the strategies associated with each. The Brazilian Information Society's Program (SOCINFO) was established in 1999. The discussions regarding the public libraries and their insertion into the Brazilian Program began in 2000, through actions to encourage the involvement of the Brazilian public libraries in the Information Society and their contribution to the universal access to telecommunications services
