Abstract

This article proposes an alternative methodology for estimating the economic impact of tourism based on an input–output model developed from the Supply and Use Tables. This approach allows for a higher degree of disaggregation of tourism consumption and a more accurate estimation of direct, indirect, and induced effects. The methodology explicitly incorporates tourist heterogeneity and differentiated spending patterns, which are key elements for the design of public policies and for the sustainability of tourism activity itself. The empirical application to the case of Galicia, and particularly to the Camino de Santiago, shows that different visitor profiles generate differentiated economic impacts, highlighting the relatively high impact per unit of income generated by pilgrims.
