Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the territorial dimension of tourism in the island of Ometepe, Nicaragua. The key assumption of the study links the presence of rich natural resources in the island with an incipient tourism sector geared to promote, locally, the less aggressive forms of tourist activities. In order to demonstrate this, in the first part of the paper, we describe the geographical scenario in which tourism has grown in the last decade, at both national and local levels. Then we present some of the most significant results of a questionnaire-survey carried out among tourists that were visiting Ometepe at the beginning of 2007. Our major research findings show the promotion of the island, in the international tourist market, based on its natural singularity and the position of Ometepe as a destination included in a list of places to be visited in Nicaragua, as well as in other countries of the region, by foreign tourists.
