Abstract

Ornithological tourism is a paradigmatic case of the unstoppable evolution that the tourist industry has experienced in the last few decades. We are in front of a highly specialized tourist market, where the environment and its resources have turned into the backdrop for a multitude of leisure activities. In this study, the ornithological tourism product is defined, framing it into the trends of postfordist consumers. The singularity and complexity of this tourist typology are analyzed, in order to discover the opportunities and threats that its increasing development mean. Finally, some challanges will be introduced to comply with the aim of converting ornithological tourism into a real catalyzer for the conservation of the natural resources, and more precisely for the protection of birds, which are the main consuming object of the ornithological tourists´ gaze.
