Abstract

We study in this paper the internal characteristics of the seaside hotel business in two Mediterranean areas that are representative of the «sun, sand and sea» segment: Benidorm, in Alicante province, and Peñíscola in the province of Castellón, both in the Valencian Country (Spain). Furthermore, we analyze how deep their potential competitiveness lies in the performance of their respective hospitality corporations. Well-established hotels have contributed, in both areas, to the development and specialization of tourism. Additionally, hotels display the most coherent managerial attitude among tourism related businesses. Drawing from the Resource and Capabilities Theory and from the Theory of Organizational Configurations, we have developed a strategic analysis targeted at identifying —and building a model of— the internal and external organizational attributes that support the attainment, sustainment, and appropriation of company-level competitive advantages, whose joint interaction gets international success to a tourism area.
