Abstract

In this paper we provide an analysis of the Spanish tourism demand growth cycle, during the period 1990-2011. The aim is twofold. Firstly, analyze tourism growth cycle, distinguishing between domestic tourism and inbound tourism. Secondly, we compare tourism growth cycle and economic growth cycle to detect a/symmetries and synchronization. The results show that nonresident tourism drags economic activity contributing to increase employment and production. However, domestic tourism generates greater activity gains, in expansion phase, while in recession generates minor losses.
